Segaar-King Earthquake Update
|
Dear Friends and Family:
We pray that God is blessing you and keeping you in his grace. Today, Sunday, February 14, is the final of three national days of prayer and fasting here in Haiti. Anecdotal evidence suggests that over 90% of Haitians have been attending Christian worship and prayer over the last three days. Zach has personally witnessed huge open-air prayer services all over Port-au-Prince while nearly every business is closed. Yesterday, Zach led an open air service of prayer and encouragement in the yard of a collapsed Christian school in Port-au-Prince operated by the Canadian Reformed Church. God certainly has the attention of the Haitian people right now! Pray that Haitians will stop fearing another earthquake and put their faith in the everlasting God who promises to be near his people in their suffering.
In addition to all the challenges and needs in our ministry at this time, please pray for Esther, our eight-month-old baby, who is suffering from a severe case of RSV (a respiratory virus) and is having difficulty breathing. For over four days she has had a high-fever and has not been eating. Please pray that God will bring a recovery right now! Pray also for Vivian. She will need an operation to place tubes in her ears soon. Pray for Sharon too as she courageously holds the family together without Zach. Finally, pray that Zach can depart Haiti this Thursday for three weeks with his family in Grand Rapids.
In addition to the relief response (i.e., food/water, shelter, and health care) being coordinated by Christian Reformed World Relief Committee, we also need funds for long-term reconstruction of our Haitian partner organizations and churches. We are attaching a brochure from Christian Reformed World Missions about how to donate to the long-term reconstruction of Haitian Christian organizations, churches, and the communities that we serve. Please prayerfully consider donating to these needs.
Finally, if you are interested in seeing a news story featuring Sharon, our family and the earthquake, please put the following address in your web browser:

Thanks for your prayers and encouragement!

Dear Friends and Family:
The Psalmist writes in Psalm 73:25-26: “Whom have I in heaven but you? And the earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” For us, these words have come to frame the entire experience of the earthquake in Haiti on January 12. So many who began January 12 with houses, money, cars, and all manner of material possessions began January 13 with only the cloths on their backs. Hundreds of thousands lost children, parents, sisters, brothers, cousins and other family members. Concrete, steel, wood, and even human flesh were flattened by the power of the trembling earth. And yet, what has filled the void of loss in so many peoples’ hearts is more durable than any of these. The consolation of the Holy Spirit, the assurance of God’s promises, and hope for our eternal reward strengthen our hearts and our bodies in these times.
Please give thanks for: -The massive effort mounted by Sous Espwa staff to distribute food and tarps to communities that we served before the earthquake. We have fed thousands in the name of Christ. -Zach’s safe return from a trip to Jacmel and the surrounding mountains. Many of these areas have yet to receive any aid because landslides which have closed the roads. -Collaboration between different missions during the relief efforts. We have distributed a large quantity of food from Convoy of Hope (related to the Assembly of God Church) and have purchased many thousands of dollars of food from private stores. We are purchasing tarps and other relief supplies through other missions as well.
Please pray for: -Good coordination and communication between North American and Haitian staff members, home offices, and CRC agencies involved in the effort. -No rain in the greater Port-au-Prince and Jacmel areas for the next few weeks. With people living under tarps and sheets, rain would bring further misery and illness. -Continued generous giving to short and long-term relief and redevelopment of Haiti. -The adjustment of our children to live in Michigan. The earthquake has been particularly difficult for our children because of evacuation, Zach’s continued presence in Haiti, and the psychological effects of the earthquake. -Our health, peace of mind, and plans to reunite our family. Zach is suffering from a bad sinus infection while Sharon is shouldering the heavy burden of managing all four kids without him. We hope to get our family together by the end of February for some time.
Thanks for your prayers and support,

Earthquake Update
|
Dear Friends and Family:
It has been a long and challenging two weeks since the earthquake in Haiti on January 12. The phrase that best captures the emotions of the last few days comes from Job 1:20: “The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.” Our thoughts turn toward our good friend Caleb Petit Homme who has been such a blessing to our ministry in Haiti over the last few years. Caleb was a young man who truly had the heart of a servant. He worked tirelessly to train the youth of the CRC of Haiti on many subjects. His industry and intelligence was a tremendous asset to his local church, Jacquet CRC. It has been two weeks since we’ve seen Caleb and we may never know exactly what happened to him. Our two national staff members of the Perspectives Reformees Follow-Up Center, Pastor Sem Hyppolite and Madam Petion, both lost homes and family members during the earthquake and are living in temporary shelters. One of our long-term partner organizations, the Program for Diaconal Formation (PWOFOD), lost its entire building in the quake. Many of its staff members lost homes and loved ones as well. Our heart goes out especially to Pastor Ens of PWOFOD who has yet to learn what happened to his wife.
Despite these great losses, God’s grace is evident. Haitian staff members of our ministry partners have been coming daily to our office to help us divide rice bags and analyze information from our community surveys. God has granted us safety in planning and executing food distributions. Worship and Scripture have been an encouragement even in these dark days. We have news of a massive outpouring of help from our supporting churches such as Bethany CRC of Muskegon, MI which took an offering of more than $6,000 to help in our Haiti relief effort. Please pray for missionary families (like ours) separated because of the earthquake. Pray for patience and good communication under the daily stress of the relief effort. Pray for safety for mission staff and Haitian partners. Finally, pray for our own children, Hannah, Isaiah, Vivian, and Esther, who are coping with their sudden evacuation to Michigan and starting a new school.
Thank you for your prayers and compassion,
Zachary King |

Earthquake Update
|
Dear Friends and Family:
We are nearly on day eight after last week's powerful earthquake in Haiti and much has changed. Sharon and our children are in Michigan and Zach remains in Haiti where he is working with his coworkers and other aid organizations to address the immediate problems facing the greater Port-au-Prince and Jacmel areas. Please see the update below to learn more about what is happening.
The Christian Reformed Church of North America is holding a press conference in Grand Rapids, MI this afternoon on the Haiti earthquake and its efforts to respond. Sharon is participating in the conference. We don't know what news organizations will attend, if any, but it might be worthwhile to check the local evening news in a Grand Rapids, MI station tonight and see if the conference is being carried. Thanks!
Update #4 (1-20-10)
We give thanks to God that he continues to provide safety for all CRWRC and CRWM staff. This morning around 6 am EST a very strong aftershock (6.1) struck the Port-au-Prince area. International news media are calling this the strongest shock since the initial earthquake. Most staff members were at home during the quake and all are accounted for (including the CRWRC disaster response representative). Please pray for continued safety for all those attempting to assist the Haitian people in this trying hour.
CRWRC and CRWM staff members, along with partner organizations, are working quickly to assess the most pressing needs of the communities. Relief needs surveys are being distributed. We have been able to make contact with all of our partner organizations and are receiving information about their families and housing situations. Open-air markets are functioning, and fuel is becoming more accessible. Banks in Port-au-Prince remain closed. There are still large numbers of people living outside their homes in make shift tents.
The Christian Reformed Church of Haiti has opened its Ministry Center property to house Medical Team International doctors who are working in an area hospital to treat the wounded. With so many people harmed by falling debris, medical treatment remains a priority. Please pray for these efforts as well. |

Earthquake Update

Dear Friends and Family:
We give thanks to God that he allowed Sharon and our children to be safely evacuated from Port-au-Prince to Grand Rapids, MI. They will be staying in the CRWM apartments. Although the decision to split our family was difficult, Zach is needed on the field to assist in relief responses and the children must have stability and security. Please take a look at the update below. You will find evidence of God's miraculous sustaining of his people in the midst of tribulation.

Earthquake Update
|
Dear Friends and Family:
Sorry for the time it has taken to get you another update e-mail. Our mission has a policy that all public statements must be approved in crisis situations. This helps to avoid confusion for all involved. Also our Internet has been up and down all the time. We actually have to updates that have been approved in the last 24 hours. Please take a close look at the second as it contains information of the anticipated evacuation of Sharon and our children to the US.
Update from Haiti (#1):
In the midst of the terrible suffering of the Haitian people after Tuesday’s earthquake, we give thanks to God for the grace he has given us. All expatriate staff members of our mission have been accounted for. Our families are doing well, but still a little shaken up from the experience, as is everyone. We have not heard from a few of our Haitian staff members nor do we have news of all of the staff of the Haitian partner organizations we work with. Over the next few days we will be attempting to make contact with as many people as possible, but at this point, it is difficult because the phone connections are either down or overloaded with traffic. We can hear many large transport planes landing and taking off from the Port-au-Prince airport, so there is beginning to be evidence of a relief response to this tragedy. One bit of good news: an engineer stopped by yesterday to examine a couple of the missionary houses that sustained damage. He told us that despite cracks in the walls, they were structurally sound.
Please pray for the following: 1. Patience and wisdom for decisions about the next steps for mission staff and ministries. A team has been appointed by our mission to make decisions about staff security in Haiti. Some plans are coming together for relief projects, but they depend on how things develop the next few days. 2. Trust and faith in God’s provision for our lives. Currently our missionary families have adequate supplies of food, fuel, water, and other supplies. We remain hopeful for basic services to be available in the coming days and weeks. 3. Opportunities to contact our Haitian staff, partners, and friends that we have not heard from. 4. Coordination for efforts to deliver food and water to the suffering Haitian people.
Thanks for your prayers!
(Update #2)
We continue to give thanks to God for protecting staff members of the Christian Reformed Church during and after Tuesday evening’s severe earthquake near Port-au-Prince, the capital and largest city of Haiti. The immense suffering of the Haitian people continues to unfold as Haitians search the city for loved ones.
While the earthquake caused only moderate damage in some neighborhoods, it caused catastrophic damage in others. It is becoming clear that repairs to the city’s infrastructure and the normal functioning of the city will take months. We are also hoping to receive a CRWRC disaster response member today. CRWRC hopes to begin organizing relief efforts as soon as possible.
In light of this, it was decided today to have the mothers and children on our team leave Haiti. We are still exploring which option would be the best for these family members. The Segaar-Kings and the Van Dams families, a total of 10, will be leaving as soon as it is feasible. Zachary King and Howard Van Dam will remain in Haiti, along with Tony DeKoter, Ad and Coby deBlaeij, Leslie Miller and her husband Diego Toussaint.
Sounds of large military jet aircraft landing and taking off can be heard often from the P-a-P airport and Haitian police and United Nations soldiers can be seen patrolling streets today. Relief organizations are also arriving and are setting up bases around the city. As to be expected, stores, offices, and schools are not functioning.
The open-street markets are full of people—for those who have the resources to buy food. There are long lines of people standing in front of water trucks with their five gallon buckets. By God’s grace, Quisqueya Christian School, the home of CRC partner teachers and the school many missionary children attend, has suffered minor damage and is now becoming the base for relief efforts.
Please continue to pray for mission staff members in the coming days due to the increased pressure of living in such a difficult situation. Adequate but limited supplies of food, fuel, and water are available. Pray also for the safety of our Haitian staff members, two of which are still unaccounted for. Pray also for our Haitian ministry partners, some of whom we have yet to hear from. Most of all, pray that mission staff and our partners will be the light of Christ amidst the suffering people of Haiti. Thank you for your continued prayers and support. |

January 13, 2010 Greetings from Haiti. It is with thanksgiving that we are able to write this letter to you. Yesterday evening at approximately 5 p.m. EST a very powerful earthquake struck the capital and largest city of Haiti--Port-au-Prince. This is where we live and serve as missionaries. We were all eating dinner in our home when the quake hit. Sharon quickly grabbed and carried Esther while she was still buckled into her highchair and we managed to get out of our house with our other three children too. A great wail of mourning pierced the air immediately after the initial quake hit which was the unforgettable sound of a multitude crying and praying in the midst of sudden destruction. Our home has many cracks and much has fallen and broken, but it is still standing. Because we fell while getting out, we have some scrapes and bruises. However, we are all alive. We give thanks to God for this great gift. We are still experiencing aftershocks of the earthquake though they are smaller than the initial earthquake. During this experience I am reminded of the well-known chapter of Psalm 23 which our daughter Hannah is memorizing. It states, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” This morning Zach drove through “the shadow of death” when he passed through some of the streets here in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Our main grocery store has collapsed (with hundreds trapped inside), many homes, schools, businesses and government buildings (including the Presidential Palace) have crumbled, with many thousands injured and dead. On our way to check out our office this morning, we witnessed a mother crying out for her lost daughter in the dust. She, like so many others, has not been able to find loved ones as many bodies have not been collected and identified. Our internet and cell phones are down (though satellite connections still work). Since we are using a friend’s satellite internet because ours does not work, communication with you will not always be available. In your prayers, we ask that you give thanks for sparing our lives and the lives of our fellow missionaries. Please pray for all the injured and the families whom have had someone die. Furthermore, please pray for the people of Haiti in the coming days as the country is in a state of crisis. Pray that relief organizations, the United Nations, and the Haitian police will maintain control of the streets. Pray also that the leaders of the Haitian churches and organizations we serve will be safe. Finally, pray for us as we do not know the next time we will be able to buy food or go to a bank, etc. Haiti is in crisis, but our God is faithful and we have confidence in Him. Living for Jesus, Zachary, Sharon, Hannah, Vivian, Isaiah, and Esther Segaar-King |
