Ø   The GEMS girls club will begin their Hand 'n Hand fundraiser to benefit the GEMS clubs of Africa on Oct. 8. It will end Oct. 21.  Please see one of the GEMS, counselors, or Information Desk to place an order for these delicious soup mixes, cookie mixes, or pretzel kits along with the FREE handmade African ornament or potholder.  Questions? Ø   GEMS CIT’s will meet Oct. 14 from 6:30-8pm in Rm. 129. Remember to read servant leadership in your CIT manual in preparation for the time together.

Ø   Snowplowing bids are being accepted for the ‘09-‘10 plowing season. Pick up a form from the church office and return it to Ron Borst by Oct. 13. Questions? Call Ron at 895-5220.

Ø   Looking for a place to help at church? A Nursery Coordinator is needed to help schedule people for nursery. Please contact either Pat in the office or Jen Konyndyk (895-4884).

Ø   Do you remember the older guy you used to think was so cool and how much you wanted to be like him? It’s your turn to be that person to a boy. During our Kids Hope USA hour at school we play games, shoot hoops, work on simple math, & read together, etc. How cool is it to know you influenced a child’s life into adulthood? Contact Aileen VanderSchuur, our Kids Hope USA Director, at aileenv@altelco.net or 616 204-3540 to find out how you can become a Kids Hope USA mentor or substitute mentor.

Ø   All information for the next Second Thoughts newsletter will be due on October 25.

Ø   Grocery Showers: The container to put groceries in for Lindsey Batts and Adam Van Lente will be in the lobby yet today. Other containers for Stacie Jeurink and Mike Veldhoff and also for Jesse Ondersma and Brooke Buikema will be there for two Sundays beginning today. Please support these couples in their upcoming marriages.

Ø  Cookies are needed for after the Campus Ministries church service at GVSU on Oct. 18. Just as we enjoy cookies after our service, so do the students. If you would be willing to bake some, please call Mary Espinoza at 895-5251, AND, looking ahead – the GVSU potluck is Oct. 25. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet the students who are your brothers and sisters in Christ.

Ø  One very important element of building God's Kingdom is the ministry of prayer. There is an exciting opportunity for a short term mission trip to Haiti, a prayer mission trip. This trip will be led by CRC Pastor Jon DeBruyn and is organized through Christian Ref. World Missions (CRWM) with the assistance of Zach and Sharon King in Haiti.  Dates: Nov. 11-18 (with the possibility of extending the trip to Nov. 22nd/23rd for those who would like to participate in the CRWM/CRWRC Spiritual Retreat to be held at beautiful Haitian beach resort). There is a donor that has provided "scholarships" for those who would like to participate in the prayer trip but are hesitating because of financial need.  Please contact Pastor Jon DeBruyn at pastorjondb@chartermi.net or 231-947-3526 for more information.

Ø  Helping in the Community: Second CRC is serving others in our community by caring for the younger siblings of the Allendale Christian School Preschoolers in our church nursery while they attend field trips with their parents. We’d like to make a difference by helping these parents.  Please contact Jenny Walters (875-6075 or mjccwalters@charter.net) if you are available to help.  Choose from the following dates/times:

Our son Jesse VanderSchuur has been in Iraq since Aug near Baquba. We received an email from him that his platoon is going to go to a different location near the Iranian border. With all that is going on over there in Iran at the moment, it is a little scary for us. Please pray for him and his platoon.

Ø  If you like to sing or are interested in drama, join the Allendale Community Christmas Musical group. Rehearsals: 3pm at Second CRC each Sunday. Call Jeff Bond at 566-1060 for details.

Ø  Allendale Christian School's Pumpkin Patch will be open every Fri. (4pm-dusk) and Sat. (9am-3pm) in Oct. Location: 5693 Lake Mich. Dr., just west of 56th Ave.  Look for the sign! A variety of pumpkins available in every size -- orange or white and gourds, too!  Come ready to pick!  100% of the proceeds benefit the school. 

Ø  Looking for some unique items?  Ready for some family fun?  Come to the Allendale Christian School Auction on Sat., Oct. 17 at the school at 11050 64th Ave. Fun begins at 4pm with a Pig Roast & Hot Dogs, and the Silent Auction. At 6pm the kids can watch a movie or play a game as the verbal auction gets underway. If you want to get in on the action early or get more information, check out www.allendalechristian.com.

Ø  The Calvin College Gospel Choir will join with two Allendale High School Choirs on Oct. 12 in a Benefit Concert at 7 pm in the high school Fine Arts Center to raise funds to build a well in Africa with the help of World Hope. Suggested donation at the door: $3. Come, help bring clean drinking water to those who have none.

Ø  Are you struggling with anger, bitterness, confusion? Bethany Christian Services is offering a free, four-session workshop on The Power of Forgiveness: Healing the Hurts You Don’t Deserve Oct. 13, 20, 27, &  Nov. 3 from 7-9pm. For details, contact Phyllis at 224-7488 or stepasst@bethany.org.

Ø  An informational meeting will be held at Lighthouse Community Church in Allendale on Tues., Oct. 13, at 7:00 pm for anyone interested in going on a Mission Trip to Guatemala to minister to orphans and others in extreme need.  Michelle Janssen and Kathy Demers have led several trips and will discuss possible dates for 2010.  Prayerfully consider if God is calling you to serve Him in this way by serving others. Ø  The Ladies Bible League Zeeland Division will host a Fall Fellowship Dinner at Rusk CRC at 6:30 pm on Thurs. Oct. 29. A family style dinner for $10 will be served. Mike & Linda Philo of Fellowship CRC in Grandville will share of their travels to Israel and Jordan.
